In December, Art Center Ukiah expanded into the building next to the center's Corner Gallery, and began offering classes. We are lining up a full slate for the Spring.
Well-known local artist Christine Hamilton, member of the Yokaia Tribe, has offered to give classes in the making of coil baskets. A student of Elsie Allen at the age of nineteen, Mrs. Hamilton has been teaching traditional Pomo culture, dance, regalia and basket making for sixteen years. Her baskets are available at the Grace Hudson Museum. She has exhibited her work at the National Museum of the American Indian in New York and the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. The local community is encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity. She will supply the native materials which she has gathered in the traditional way. Classes will be held at Art Center Ukiah, 203 South State Street (next to the Corner Gallery), in 3 parts: Saturday January 17th 3:30-5:30 pm, Sunday January 25th 3:30-5:30, and Saturday January 31st 3:30-5:30. Sign-up at the Corner Gallery between 11 am and 6 pm, Tuesday through Saturday, or call 707-462-1400.
